USC Recruitment – Budget/Business Technician

The Astronautical Engineering Department in the USC Viterbi School of Engineering is seeking a Budget/Business Technician to join its outstanding faculty, staff, and students. This position reports directly to the staff supervisor and works closely with research faculty and department chair.

  • This position performs a combination of duties related to the processing and assisting in monitoring of business transactions related to restricted and unrestricted accounts, in addition of discretionary, gift and grants accounts for academic unit.
  • Responsible for the RPL and LPL student team projects accounts on task related to their operating and infrastructure accounts, such as procurement of services for their vehicle launches and insurances, monitoring their donations and fundraising. Keep track of their income and expenses.
  • Assists in performing analyses of technical, clerical, and administrative on tasks related to operating budgets, including sponsored research accounts, requisitions, purchase orders, work orders, travel documents, transfer request forms, etc.
  • Assists faculty in financial transactions such as purchasing equipment and supplies and accounting for travel expenditures and reimbursements. Interacts with vendors, pays invoices, prepares and processes department orders, check requests, requisitions, pro-cards, honorariums and consultants.
  • Ensures confidentiality and controls access to sensitive information such as faculty or staff personnel files.
  • Processes payroll for faculty and students and monitors activity.
  • Assists with budget preparation and proposal submissions, both federal and non-federal, working closely with the Dept of Contracts and Grants (DCG) and Sponsored Project Account (SPA). Keeps current on financial and submission requirements by external agencies and internal offices.
  • Maintains internal account records and reconciles account balances and activity to university financial records and corrects errors if necessary.
  • Processes gift receipts and deposits. Tracks financial activity on gift account and discretionary accounts.

Performs other related duties and responsibilities. The university reserves the right to add or change duties anytime.

The hourly rate range for this position is $22.77 – $25.36. Preferred Qualifications


Associate’s Degree or combined experience and education, with college coursework in business administration and two years office financial experience.

Minimum Education: High school or equivalent, Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education Minimum Experience: 2 years Minimum Field of Expertise: Directly related office financial experience to provide a knowledge of accounts payable, income and expense accounting and reconcilement, and budget preparation.
