The Office of Academic Records & Registrar is seeking a Student Services Advisor to join the Petition Services unit. The Student Services Advisor counsels and provides undergraduate and graduate students with a range of petition services that require collaborative work with academic units, and other areas including: admissions, financial aid, advisement, graduation counseling, records and registration. This position provides specialized services on general petition cases, and coordinates delivery of services to central university committees such as CAPP, including the presentation of sensitive appeal issues.

The Advisor is expected to counsel or advise students on petition protocols, including registration transactions, grading errors, and a variety of special and complex circumstances. This role works collaboratively with university central student services to ensure students are referred to the proper resources for additional guidance. The Advisor is expected to provide initial evaluation and assessment of petition requests, and is responsible for preparing cases for presentation to special university committees. This position serves as an expert resource on all petition matters. Critical thinking, analytical skills, knowledge of academic and university policies, are required. The Advisor must determine if a formal request for waiver of a university or department policy is appropriate. Therefore, professional experience with academic petition processes is highly desirable. Evaluates complex challenges and requests regarding academic status, enrollment, eligibility, courses and registration issues. Must provide guidance and counsel to students, and recommend the most appropriate course of action.

The Advisor is required to provide exemplary, first-tier customer service support, while also working collaboratively with the One-Stop advisement team and faculty and university staff. Strong presentation and written communication skills are required. This is a dynamic department, with ongoing, in-person student contact. This position reports to the Student Services Manager for Petition Services.

Required Education

Preferred Experience

  • Two Years
  • Previous academic petitions experience
  • Experience in interpreting and explaining academic policies and procedures to students, faculty and staff
  • Proven experience advising, problem-solving and counseling students with academic or other record errors
  • Strong public presentation skills
  • Experience with conflict management and de-escalation of high-stress student situations


Preferred Field Of Expertise

  • Knowledge of student and academic programs, policies, procedures and knowledge of the USC Student Information System

The hourly rate for this position is $28.87 .
