General Summary
Location: In addition to our Portland, ME home office location, we are open to candidates within commutable distances to our Chattanooga, TN, and Columbia, SC home office locations.
We are looking for a project manager in Marketing to see projects through inception, creation, and distribution across digital, social, and print channels. In this role, you would collaborate with Marketing’s creative and strategy teams while building your project management chops by being part of a project management team within Marketing. Responsibilities span the range from leading daily stand-ups to building a longer-term planning process, in addition to ensuring the flow of work across team members to meet objectives and deadlines.
There is flexibility in the opening, and we are evaluating individuals from entry to experienced levels.
Principal Duties And Responsibilities
Project Management
- Meets with individuals across Marketing to translate a plan into defined campaigns with goals, objectives, and scope, then converts those plans into specific projects, assigning tasks to creative and development teams.
- Identifies resources needed and negotiates with people managers as required, ensuring clarity of project roles and responsibilities, so that all project plans are completed within defined timeframes.
- Balances resources against work needed to identify where work should shift, or resources need to be added to avoid capacity issues. Brings analytical skills to the role to develop methods for analyzing capacity and constraints.
- Creates projects for marketing assets and promotions using Workfront, a project management software platform. Ensures that project documentation is complete, current, and detailed for reference by project contributors as well as for archiving purposes.
- Builds views and reports in Workfront for leadership and managers in Marketing to view full campaigns for priority initiatives as well as monitor the capacity of their organizations.
- Provides recommendations and advocates for improving the planning process and the flow of work between people on projects.
- Identifies risks in meeting deadlines, brings attention to these risks in stand-ups or weekly meetings, and works with broader team to adjust requirements, resources, or deadlines.
- Develops and improves project management and digital marketing skills through regular training, both directed by manager and self-initiated.
- Articulate project management best practices with peer group and others at Unum.
Leadership
- Proactively establishes and maintains cooperative, productive partnerships on current project/deliverables.
- Promote the benefits of change and act as a catalyst for change within the organization, as well as adapting to changes imposed by others
- Organizes and guides the activities of the project team. Prioritizes tasks to meet deliverables and commitments on time. Ensures that project member’s time and experience is well utilized. Recommends alternatives/options to minimize any schedule delay.
- Shares project experience/knowledge and mentor others to help build project management skills
Job Specifications
- Any combination of education or experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree with five years of project management experience.
- In depth knowledge/understanding of the corporate methodology and a broad understanding/awareness of other methodologies.
- Strong knowledge of logical data model/management.
- Strong understanding of Unum’s products and businesses preferred.
- Strong ability to work effectively in a dynamic, rapidly changing business and technical environment.
- Effectively uses technical project management tools
- Strong initiative and ability to set stretch goals.
- Strong ability to negotiate effectively with business and IT partners on business requirements and timeframes on mid-size initiatives.
- Strong ability to rally support among peers and work effectively within challenging situations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to balance the need to gather detail with the need to solve the problem
- Strong general management skills including:
- Strong conflict resolution and negotiation skills
- Strong facilitation and elicitation skills

- Strong ability to effectively articulate difficult ideas and concepts through clear and concise verbal and/or written communication.

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.
$60,800.00-$106,500.00
Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
