The Spirit of Troy’s mission is to provide the University of Southern California with some of the finest spirit organizations in the country, including the Trojan Marching Band, USC Song Program, Mascots, and USC Spirit Leaders. These groups each offer unique support to the University through a unified endeavor of student engagement. The program provides its members with the opportunity to perform music, dance, and stunt choreography, and the ability to develop their individual artistic expression through the vehicle of the ensemble at athletic contests, various University functions, concerts, and ceremonies throughout the calendar year. It is also the function and mission of The Spirit of Troy to be the main vehicle for, and conservators of, school traditions and spirit. The USC Song Program, Mascots, and USC Spirit Leaders report through the Trojan Marching Band to the Vice President of Student Affairs.

The Spirit Advisor works in collaboration with a second Spirit Advisor on the oversight of USC Song, Spirit Leaders, and Mascot Programs. Primarily, this Spirit Advisor will be the primary instructor and coach for the Spirit Leaders and Mascot. This position should have a background in cheer/dance with experience teaching, engaging cheer teams, and student leadership.

The Spirit Advisor will work alongside the other professional and student office staff for the successful implementation of all The Spirit of Troy affairs. The Sprit Advisor will attend all staff meetings and will act on behalf of the Spirit Teams at the Band Director’s request. The Spirit Advisor will serve on committees as needed or as deemed appropriate by the Director. The administrative duties of the Spirit Advisor are carried out during the 40-hour workweek in addition to participation in certain band events in the evenings and on weekends as deemed by the Director or necessitated by the Spirit of Troy program.


Job Description

  • Responsible for oversight of USC Spirit Leaders (cheerleaders) to stunt with proper and safe techniques
  • Demonstrate/supervise safe stunting techniques
  • Monitor practice sessions to ensure safety and consistency
  • Observe team progression with positive feedback and corrections
  • Collaborate with spirit partners for the production of shows
  • Concisely review and breakdown material to ensure routines are at their best

Preferred qualifications: and abilities:

  • USA Cheer Safety & Risk Management Certification
  • First Aid and CPR Certification
  • Strong cheer background and experience
  • high school or college cheer experience
  • Great communication skills

Certain activities are contingent upon the current semester. The semester-specific duties can include, but aren’t limited to:


Fall Semester

  • Assist with the implementation of Training Camp
  • Assist in the planning and execution of High School Band Day or similar outreach
  • Attend all home football games
  • Attend full-band trips (Weekender, Notre Dame, Post-Season Championship, and Bowl Games)
  • Attend class trips as deemed necessary by the Director


Spring Semester

  • Assist in the recruitment and audition of Song/Spirit Teams
  • Attend Home Athletic events as booked by the Spirit Advisor or Director


Summer Months

  • Assist with Summer Performances
  • Attend all Orientation/Recruitment Events
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of Training Camp

The ideal candidate will exhibit a commitment to creative output, possess excellent communications skills, and demonstrate highly advanced organizational skills to maintain a broad spectrum of projects, tasks, and relationships. They will be responsible for budget management, marketing and communications including but not limited to website development and maintenance and other digital communications, personnel administration, and volunteer management.

The qualifications for this position include a bachelor’s degree, five years (minimum) of successful cheer coaching, preferably in an academic environment, and student leadership development.

The annual base salary range for this position is $60,309.82 – $67,139 .
