About UPMC Shadyside Surgical


  • 2 South – A 17-bed vascular inpatient unit at UPMC Shadyside. Our floor cares for patients who have undergone abdominal aortic aneurysm repairs, endarterectomies, amputations, femoral-to-femoral popliteal bypasses, and fistula creations/fistula repairs. 2 South also sees a diverse population of medical/surgical patients, which makes this unit a great fit for graduate nurses and nurses seeking to expand their clinical knowledge.
  • 2 Pavilion – A surgical orthopedic unit with 9 patient beds all housed in private rooms. The majority of our patients are post-op, and many experiences rapid recovery-discharged the same day or morning after. This unit also receives overflow medical-surgical and vascular patients.
  • 3 West – A surgical orthopedic unit that specializes in total joint replacement, orthopedic oncology surgical services, spine surgery, sports injuries, and a wide range of medical management. In this unit, you will experience an exciting range of services including wound care, surgical recovery, patient education, and the opportunity to see motivated patients work to get back on their feet through physical therapy and other nursing modalities. This unit works collaboratively with all members of the care team and participates in “care coordination” where the nurse is a critical part of the patient’s discharge planning.
  • 4 East – A Med/Surg Pulmonary unit, and the first med/surg unit in PA to have received the ANCC Silver Beacon Award for Excellence. In this unit, you will see a high number of cystic fibrosis and peritoneal dialysis patients, in addition to patients with pulmonary conditions such as COPD and pneumonia. 4 East strives to create a uniquely caring and healing environment, with a staff that is very supportive of each other. 4 East receives medicine teaching patients; the diverse patient population and fast-paced work make for a positive work environment.
  • 4 Pavilion – An Internal Medicine and Medical/Interventional Cardiology unit. The patients on this unit are typically admitted for a wide variety of medical conditions with a concentration on cardiac management and procedures such as PTCA, pacemaker insertion, or AICD insertion. The unit culture is team-oriented with a supportive staff, a great place for both experienced nurses as well as graduate nurses.
  • 5 Pavilion – An 18-bed medical telemetry teaching unit. This is a highly trained, team-oriented unit primarily caring for medical, cardiac monitored patients, and stroke patients. This is a teaching unit with a dynamic learning environment, where you will gain experience with chest tubes, feeding tubes, trachs, and monitors. 5 Pavilion has a fast pace of work and a diverse patient population. The culture of the unit strongly promotes collaborating with physicians, residents, interns, and multidisciplinary team members and creates an atmosphere conducive to learning.

Shifts/Hours

: Our RNs work a rotating 12-hour schedule to ensure 24/7 coverage on the floor.

Graduate Nurses must be eligible for State Board Licensure and successfully pass the examination before beginning this role OR ability to start with TPP and must obtain a license within four months of beginning the position. Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary from the My Nursing Career Ladder based on their individual experience and education.

Qualifications

  • Graduate Nurses that are eligible for the State Board Licensure and Staff Nurses with nursing experience will be considered for this position if they have an Associate’s Degree in Nursing or a BSN.
  • The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately with the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.
  • They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patients status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, and handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
  • Good clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving abilities are required as related to various aspects of patient care.
  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity. Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.



Licensure, Certifications, And Clearances


  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) either in the state where the facility is located or in a state covered by a licensure compact agreement with the state where the facility is located.
  • UPMC-approved national certification is preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
