About Our Intensive Care Units
4 West
– NSICU: The Neuroscience ICU at UPMC Shadyside specializes in care for neurological, neuro-surgical, stroke, and seizure patients. Our patients are typically post-op for procedures such as craniotomies, spinal surgeries, and de-bulking, though we also receive overflow patients from other ICUs. RNs in the NICU are part of the Nurse Driven Stroke Assessment team as well, responding to all in-house strokes within the hospital.
MSICU
– The Medical-Surgical ICU at UPMC Shadyside is an 8-bed critical care facility primarily serving patients recovering from thoracic and foregut surgeries, though we also occasionally see other types of medical and surgical patients including vascular, urological, and orthopedic. We are a small unit with a caring culture and a focus on patient comfort and safety.
CTICU
– 2 Main – The Cardiothoracic ICU at UPMC Shadyside is an 18-bed critical care facility specializing in care for high acuity cardiac patients. Patients on our unit are typically post-op for procedures such as open heart surgery, valve placement and repair, and abdominal aneurysm dissection. We work with Intra Aortic Balloon Pumps, lumbar drains, Swan-Ganz catheters, CRRT, and vasoactive drips, and receive some overflow from other ICUs during high census. 2 Main is a fast-paced ICU that requires nurses with excellent critical thinking skills and adaptability.
SICU
– 4 West – The Surgical ICU at UPMC Shadyside is a two-time AACN Beacon Award-winning critical care unit that cares for a variety of surgical patients, excluding open heart and neurosurgery. Our primary focus is surgical oncology, however our patient population also includes critically ill medical patients as well as vascular, urological, and general surgical patients with post-operative complications. We frequently use continuous cardiac and invasive pressure monitoring, ventilators, BIPAP, CRRT, wound vacs, and drains. Nurses on the unit are responsible for administering and titrating various infusions including anti-arrhythmics, insulin, vasopressors, sedatives, and paralytics. The SICU at Shadyside is a collaborative, innovative, highly supportive team that welcomes RNs who are energetic, self-motivated, and patient-centered.
MICU
– Cardiac/Medical ICU – The Medical ICU at UPMC Shadyside is a 20-bed critical care facility, the largest of Shadyside’s ICUs. We primarily care for critically ill oncology medical, cardiac, and post stem cell transplant patients, however, due to our size, we frequently receive overflow from many other areas of the hospital. You can expect to see procedures such as tracheostomies and bronchoscopies right at the bedside,as well as the use of ventilators, vasopressors, and CRRT machines. We are very team-oriented here, which is important as the MICU can feel hectic at times; the MICU is an extremely rewarding environment for nurses who enjoy thinking on their feet to meet challenges and solve problems.
