USC Provost IT
is the information technology services department of the USC Office of the Provost. The department provides various IT services, including infrastructure and application services, technical support, and web development and design, to over sixty university divisions, departments, and offices. Our connections across the university allow us to serve as a trusted solutions partner, using technology to help empower users and improve department business processes. USC Provost IT is part of Provost Shared Services, a group of five business units within the Office of the Provost which provide strategic expertise on a wide range of business, technology and personnel functions.
USC Provost IT has an opening for a full-time, benefit-based
Software Engineer
position. This role will be key in the design, development, and maintaining software solutions and frameworks, while adhering to functional and technical requirements. The Software Engineer will evaluate information needs, and collaborate with a broad range of customers, partners and key stakeholders. Additionally, the Software Engineer will be responsible for developing clean code and conducting regular code reviews, evaluating system flow, data usage and work processes, and investigating problem areas while managing work activities against the software development lifecycle. Execution of these duties will help demonstrate the value of ITS in action.
JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Designs, develops and maintains software applications, solutions, and frameworks, adhering to functional and technical requirements. Supports compliance, security governance, and policies by embedding industry standards and quality measures into workflows. Facilitates software innovation and the creation and initiation of continuous process improvements, leveraging the latest technology advances. Anticipates the impact of emerging technologies and accordingly recommends adjustments to departmental and/or university software services
- Evaluates system flow, data usage and work processes, and ensures developed code is maintainable and supportable once implemented. Identifies and investigates technical problem areas, resolves issues, and shares data with relevant stakeholders. Assesses and resolves issues through root cause-analysis exercises, recommending realistic solutions to enhance business value
- Leverage insights on customer pain points, challenges, and needs to provide customer-focused solutions. Supports customer point-of-views when identifying priorities and presenting solutions. Builds and maintains effective customer and stakeholder relationships by providing timely follow-up and feedback. Handles customer requests and routes them to appropriate parties for tracking and resolution
- Manages work activities against the software development lifecycle. Assists with project and task planning, and the development of performance metrics. Measures activities and programs for success, and communicates improvement opportunities to relevant stakeholders and leadership
- Collaborates with team members and management to support the ITS application services department vision, implementing and supporting effective solutions for software development. Maintains currency with technology, standards, and best practices, and supports process improvement efforts. Aids the cultivation of an inclusive environment and a culture of trust and transparency, sharing information broadly, openly, and deliberately. Actively embodies ITS values and behaviors (e.g., accountability, ethics, best-in-class customer service)
- Manage and work with student worker programmers. Develop user stories, perform code review, and assign/track tasks.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree. Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education
- Minimum Experience: 2 years
- Minimum Field of Expertise: Experience performing tests of units, system integration, performance testing and user acceptance. Comprehensive knowledge of architecture, design and development of software solutions. Excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to establish strong, positive working relationships and rapport with diverse groups of team members. Ability to provide technical expertise and creative solutions while maintaining alignment to the organization’s objectives and customer needs. Substantial knowledge of security concepts, familiarity with secure code development techniques, and understanding of scalable and automated solutions. Ability to provide both detailed information as well as summaries to management.
Preferred Technical Skills
- Web development : Dotnet, c#, Entity Framework, SQL Server, Javascript, JQuery, React, Azure
- System Integrations : Python, Microsoft SSIS, Apache Airflow, Powershell, Linux
- Salesforce (System Design, APEX programming)
- Preferred Experience: 4 years
- Preferred Field of Expertise: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer information systems, information technology, or relevant field. Four years’ experience in information technology, higher education, or other relevant field.
The annual base salary range for this position is $103,506.33 – $125,000.00. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
